Editor’s Pick

A blue and gray Florida scrub-jay perched on a twig, with its head turned to the side.

We don’t want no scrubs — just scrub jays.

The Northern mockingbird’s 98-year reign as the state bird of Florida could come to an end if a bill by state lawmakers is passed. Two birds are now vying for the title: the flamingo and (our pick) the Florida scrub jay.

If you disagree with our choice, you can hang out with flamingos at Discovery Cove. Alternatively, bring your binoculars to Rock Springs Run State Reserve to catch a glimpse of local scrub jays.

News Notes

Holiday

Sundown tonight marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah. The celebration runs until sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Celebrate the new year tonight by attending the Rosh Hashanah Dinner at Chabad of South Orlando.
Orlando is the No. 2 best city for coffee lovers in the US, per a new WalletHub report, which used metrics like average cost and cafes per capita. Whether you order something simple or take pleasure in making baristas’ mornings more complicated, we’ve got plenty of stellar coffee shops in O-Town.

Mansion Monday

Cue the “Succession” theme song — this lakefront Lake Windemere home looks like something straight out of the media empire-centric TV show. European-style architecture lines every corner of the ~12,000-sqft estate, featuring nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and outrageous views. There is also a home gym, movie theater, and several huge walk-in closets. Obviously.

Seasonal

Today is the autumnal equinox, which means fall will officially arrive at 2:19 p.m. The leaves may not turn as orange in Orlando as other parts of the country, but you can keep your eyes peeled for falling foliage at a local park.

Wellness

There are 75 days until the Orlando Half Marathon Weekend. That means you’ve got around 11 weeks to prepare for the 13.1-mile race through Downtown Orlando where live music, beautiful scenery, and community vibes combine, finishing at Lake Eola Park. Pssst — there’s a 5K too.

Weather

La Niña may be on the horizon. The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts a 71% chance of the weather system from October to December. In Orlando, this climate cycle usually brings warmer + drier weather while in effect. (USA TODAY)

Cause

Host and comedian Nate Bargatze donated $250,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of America during the 2025 Emmys, using length of acceptance speeches to determine the amount donated. Luckily for us, there’s no time limit on giving back to Central Florida’s local chapter. (USA Today)

Film

Calling all Studio Ghibli fans. The historic animation house is currently celebrating 40 years of timeless storytelling with Studio Ghibli Fest, featuring movie theater screenings of its most famous films. “Howl’s Moving Castle” is playing through Wednesday, Sept. 24, and “Spirited Away” is screening next month. Find Orlando’s participating theaters.

City Guide

Breaking your fast, not the bank

An aerial shot of a food counter, with a bunch of different ingredients suitable for bowls. There is meat, rice, veggies, sauces, all within grey metallic tubs on the white counter. There are red and yellow spoons, and metal tongs in some of them, ready to be served.

Looking for lunch in Orlando? What about downtown tacos? Or barbecue in Winter Park? Don’t compromise — or break the bank. We’ve got the best lunch deals around town (including some of our favorites).

Downtown Orlando

Tikka Bowls and Tacos | 255 S. Orange Ave. #109
This eclectic menu blends Indian flavors with Mexican influence, as bowls, burritos, and tacos are on the menu alongside curries, biryani, and samosas. Pro tip: Order a mango lassi to wash everything down.

North Orlando

Winter Park Biscuit Company | 3201 Corrine Dr.
Everything is vegan at this East End Market comfort food spot. Think: Chicken strips, chicken sandwiches, bacon egg and cheese biscuits, and Impossible Burgers.

Tourist Corridor

Bricks & Bowls | Multiple locations
Create your own bowl or choose from a range of chef-curated options at this superfood-centric spot. We’re fans of the carne asada bowl and house-made tomato soup. You can head to the location in The Mall at Millenia, or either of the two in Winter Park.

The Wrap

It’s officially the first day of fall, and we should be getting a cool breeze any minute now.

Feel like a treat? Phat Ash Bakes is exceeding expectations once again with its Nostalgia Week lineup of ludicrous cookie creations. At times like these, I wish I were a teenager again. That way, I wouldn’t need 3-5 business days to eat one.
